Poetry Slam

Poetry slams
mean “who are you” or “who I am”
a paragraph long or words by six
a stranglehold around my throat
or words that flow, suppressing the choke
a sudden moment of revelation
or well conceived word agitation
aggressive flow on unencumbered tongue
or quivering lips exhausting my punctured lungs
powerful words in building tone
or demoralizing silence from a crowd of one
Poetry slams can hurt you deeply
if you let your words creep out weakly
taste the essence of the room
and bring your mind and heart exhumed
enter the moments where they can hear
the triumph glowing and the silencing of fears.
